چکیده

TRUTH-TELLER, a program for testing a Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) knowledge representation in practical ethics, compares cases presenting ethical dilemmas about whether to tell the truth. Its comparisons list ethically relevant similarities and differences (i.e., reasons for telling or not telling the truth which apply to both cases, and reasons which apply more strongly in one case than another or which apply only to one case). The reasons may invoke ethical principles or selfish considerations. We describe a knowledge representation for this practical ethical domain including representations for reasons and principles, truth telling episodes, contextually important scenarios, and comparison rules. In a preliminary evaluation, a professional ethicist scored the program's output for randomly-selected pairs of cases. The work contributes to AI CBR efforts to integrate general principles and context-sensitive information in symbolically assessing case similarity and to model comparing problems to paradigmatic cases. It also furthers research on cognitive and philosophical models of ethical judgement and decision-making.

An Evaluation of the INRECA CBR System

In case-based reasoning (CBR) a huge number of systems (including commercial systems) has been developed so far and is steadily increasing. While this very dynamic situation corresponds to the situation in other computer science subfields like e.g. programming languages, the question arises whether a systematic description of CBR systems exists (again like for programming languages). The answer...

Case Based Reasoning: Case Representation Methodologies

Case Based Reasoning (CBR) is an important technique in artificial intelligence, which has been applied to various kinds of problems in a wide range of domains. Selecting case representation formalism is critical for the proper operation of the overall CBR system. In this paper, we survey and evaluate all of the existing case representation methodologies. Moreover, the case retrieval and future...

Evaluating Comparative Evaluation Models

In initially developing a model of case-based comparative evaluation, we have followed a plan that involved an early empirical evaluation by a noted domain expert. We describe the empirical evaluation and the lessons learned after we introduce the program and its knowledge sources and work through an extended example. TRUTH-TELLER, a program for testing a Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) knowledge re...

CBR as a Framework for Design: Augmenting CBR with other AI Techniques

Design is an activity in which the role of experience plays a larger part in the generation of alternative designs than theoretical or formal knowledge. This has lead to increasing interest in CBR as a way of assisting and/or automating portions of the design process. However, there are major areas in the CBR paradigm that do not address the needs of practical CBR. Here CBR is presented as a fr...

Why and How Knowledge Discovery Can Be Useful for Solving Problems with CBR

In this talk, we discuss and illustrate links existing between knowledge discovery in databases (KDD), knowledge representation and reasoning (KRR), and case-based reasoning (CBR). KDD techniques especially based on Formal Concept Analysis (FCA) are well formalized and allow the design of concept lattices from binary and complex data. These concept lattices provide a realistic basis for knowled...
